No, you’re not reading that headline wrong. Kanye West has announced he is running for the US presidency in 2020, challenging Donald Trump as well as his presumptive Democratic rival Joe Biden.
It’s a weird move for a few reasons. Not only has West been a vocal supporter of Trump during his tenure in the oval office, but it’s also very last minute if he hasn’t filed any official paperwork to appear on state election ballots.
“We must now realise the promise of America by trusting God, unifying our vision and building our future,” Yeezy tweeted. ” I am running for president of the United States! #2020VISION.”
After posing for a photo together earlier this week, Tesla boss and philanthropist Elon Musk revealed his support for the West 2020 bid. “You have my full support,” he tweeted.

As Newsweek points out, West has previously indicated his plans to vote for Trump at this year’s elections in no uncertain terms.

“Both my parents were freedom fighters, and they used to drink from fountains they were told they couldn’t drink from, and they used to sit in restaurants where they were told they couldn’t eat from. They didn’t fight for me to be told by white people which white person I can vote on,” the rapper previously said.
Yeezy has revealed his intent to run for the US presidency before. In 2019, he told an audience that he plans on joining the race in 2024, which makes this latest tweet all the more bizarre.
Add to that the fact that there are only four months to go until polling day on November 3, and it becomes even harder to know whether he is being serious about this or not.
Kanye West recently announced his next album will be titled God’s Country and released a protest single ‘Wash Us In The Blood’.
