Can you believe it’s been a decade since British four-piece Bloc Party crashed onto our stereos with Silent Alarm, one of the most exciting and fresh sounding records of the naughties? Three albums, world adoration and a hiatus announcement later, Bloc Party have some great news for fans – they’re back.
The news broke just yesterday afternoon when frontman Kele Okereke stopped by Australia’s very own Triple J studio to have a chat with Veronica and Lewis, the multifaceted artist spilling the beans on the band’s future, as well as previewing a potential snippet from their forthcoming fifth studio LP, as Triple J reports.
Okereke, who is currently on tour in Australia promoting his solo album Trick, spoke to the Triple J presenters explaining that the group are in the recording phase of their next album, “I guess it’s the first time that I have talked about it but we are making a record at the moment” he revealed.

“We’re at the writing/recording phase. We’ve started recording – I think we have about 18 [song] ideas and we’re going to lay them down properly in the next few months” Okereke detailed.
He then went on to say that the new Bloc Party is fresh, “It’s sounding like nothing that we’ve done before but that’s what everyone always says,” before actually playing part of a new song, ‘Exes’, a tune that could potentially be found on the forthcoming record, which you can hear below:
Although there is no title for Bloc Party’s fifth album nor a release date, Kele promises that the band are venturing into new ground, and he’s very excited about it, “So far there’s nothing that I can compare it to really in terms of other musicians, whereas in the past I always could – we were always trying to reference something else.”
We may be waiting a little while yet for new Bloc Party, however Kele is still making his way around the nation, performing in Melbourne tonight.
