Lana Del Rey has undoubtedly made her eager fans very happy today, announcing a new album, and plans for a book of poetry somewhere down the line.
It’s currently been just over a year since Lana Del Rey released her last album, Lust For Life, and what a wild year its been.
While the artist has spent that time reworking old tunes and touring the world, she’s also been involved in a rather confusing copyright case with Radiohead, had a brush with an attempted kidnapper, and more recently, copped criticism for her decision (and subsequent backflip) to tour Israel.
Now, Lana Del Rey is back on track, and has announced her upcoming sixth studio album.
While Lana Del Rey teased us with her new single, ‘Mariners Apartment Complex’, last week, she explained to Beats 1’s Zane Lowe that the single is set to be released on her new album, Norman Fucking Rockwell, which is due for release next year.
“Working with Jack [Antonoff], I was in a little bit of a lighter mood because he was so funny,” she explained. “So the title track is called ‘Norman Fucking Rockwell,’ and it’s kind of about this guy who is such a genius artist but he thinks he’s the shit and he knows it and he won’t shut up talking about it.”
“So often I ended up with these creative types or whatever and, you know, they just go on and on about themselves, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, yeah’. But there’s a little bit of merit to it also. They are so good. I just like the title track so much that I was like, OK, I definitely want the record to also be called that.”
The singer also took the opportunity to speak to announce her latest single, the nine-minute ‘Venice Bitch’, and reveal her new plans to release a book of poetry at some point.
“I didn’t think I would [publish them] until three weeks ago,” Lana Del Rey explained of her poetry.
“I have like 13 kind of long poems that I started binding and I thought, ‘Wow, the pages are kind of stacking up here.’ I mean, it’s easy too with haikus because it’s only three lines so you could have like 30 pages of haikus that’s only like 200 words or something.”
“But I thought they’re kind of like stacking up to look like a real book,” she continued. “So I mean what I’d like to do is sort of self publish but I’m not very good at the distribution side of things.”
“Right now, it’s tentatively called Violet Bent Backwards Over The Grass,” she explained. “That’s just from a line in one of my favourite poems that I wrote… Yeah, ‘Seven years old with dandelions grasped tightly in her hand.’”
Norman Fucking Rockwell is on track to be released next year.
