Rising hip-hop star Lil Nas X has opened up about his recent decision to come out, explaining how he isn’t accepted in the hip-hop or country communities in a new interview.

Last week, chart-topping musician Lil Nas X used the last day of Pride Month to come out, revealing the news to fans by asking them to listen to the lyrics of his song ‘C7osure (You Like)’ closely.

“Some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm no more,” Lil Nas X wrote on Twitter. “But before this month ends i want y’all to listen closely to ‘c7osure’”

Pointing towards lyrics such as “Ain’t no more actin’, man that forecast say I should just let me grow/No more red light for me, baby, only green, I gotta go/Pack my past up in the back, oh, let my future take ahold/This is what I gotta do, can’t be regrettin’ when I’m old”, fans have noted that the track in question focuses on Lil Nas X’s decision to embrace his sexuality.

Since this post, the rapper has been spending time in Europe, where he recently appeared with Cardi B at England’s Wireless Festival. While in the UK though, Lil Nas X stopped by the BBC studios to talk about his recent decision to come out, and some of the backlash he has received for it.

Speaking to the presenters, Lil Nas X noted that he “kind of revealed” his news with some cryptic Tweets, before noting it was something he hadn’t planned to do.

“It’s just something I was considering never doing, ever. Taking to the grave,” he explained. “But I don’t wanna live my entire life—especially how I got to where I’m at—not doing what I wanna do.”

Noting that he has already been receiving backlash for his decision to come out, Lil Nas X explained that he hoped he was “opening doors” for people, while also explaining how his news isn’t something that is accepted within the country or hip-hop communities.

Despite the backlash, he explains that he’s doing his best to take it all in his stride with a sense of humour, having made numerous jokes on Twitter that mock the “shocked” response to his news.
