Australia’s favourite rising musician Courtney Barnett has been making waves around the globe with her signature slack-rock gems, releasing her universally acclaimed yet internationally misunderstood sombre tune ‘Depreston’, and riding on the talented lass’ success arrives a parody from a local Aussie musician entitled ‘Impreston’.
In a cheeky little reply to Barnett’s instant classic, the folk at Noisey have premiered Brizzy-turned-Melbournian local artist Kurt Eckardt aka Astral Skulls’ synth-pop ode to Preston, he instead taking a positive stance on the northern suburb.
Chatting with Noisey, Eckhardt detailed the catalyst in creating the song, “I love the song, and Preston has always had a bad wrap, but since moving here last year it’s become my favourite place!”

He assures that ‘Impreston’ is not a putdown at all toward Courtney Barnett, explaining his motives further, “I’m a fan of Courtney Barnett, and ‘Depreston’ is a great song. The lyrics are pretty spot on for people our age who are moving further out of the city. But I still got a little defensive of Preston when I heard it, so I thought I’d make a song and clip about some of the good things it has to offer. Don’t get me wrong, some aspects of Preston are depressing, so I get why it has that reputation, but it’s a pretty great place overall.”
The accompanying video has been shot and produced in a similar manner to ‘Depreston’, of course just painting the suburb as a much more enjoyable place, noting of the killer local market that serves Melbourne’s greatest hot jam donuts (seriously).
Compare the two videos below, which artist makes a more convincing case for good old Preston?
