We recently received a long-awaited update on the long-long-awaited Daniel Johns and Luke Steele collaboration, which has been in the works for years and was first announced all the way back in 2008. That’s like, a completely different decade.

Speaking recently to triple j ahead of the release of Empire of the Sun’s new album, Steele revealed, “Me and Dan have been in a studio in L.A. for the last two months and we’ve just been working on our record and it just sounds like the future. We’re gonna be coming out with something pretty amazing.”

Steele may have just raised more questions than he answered but at the very least we know a record is forthcoming and both Johns and Steele are committed to completing it.

Back in 2008, Steele revealed he’d been working with Johns on a new project at the latter’s home studio. “It’s pretty pop. I guess it’s quite low down, there’s country songs,” Steele said of the project.

Steele later told Pedestrian.tv that he is close to finishing a full-length album with Johns. In a 2013 interview, Steele said the project, entitled Hathaway And Palmer, was loosely “inspired by African music”, with the result “sounding a bit like The Clash, [a]bit Talking Heads”.

Johns recently took to Instagram to share a photo of himself and Steele, writing, “Early DREAMS cumin soon.” Between Johns’ Instagram post and Steele’s interview, there’s no more info at the moment, but it looks like some music may finally be on its way.

Since Steele previously labelled the project “Hathaway and Palmer”, “Early DREAMS” is presumably the title of a new song, an EP, or if we’re lucky, a full-length album. Check out Steele’s interview below.
