What do you get when you pair an escapist fantasy with a whole lot of female-identifying and non-binary power?

Sydney-based goth-pop artist Lupa J has today released her incredibly shot clip for ‘Woman’, lifted from her debut album Swallow Me Whole.

Conceptualised by Lupa J herself and co-directed and shot by Sydney-based visionary Chloe de Brito, the clip features a host of striking female, non binary and femme-identifying people including Vanessa and Arna Rogers, aka No Frills Twins.

Speaking to Tone Deaf, Lupa J said of the clip:

“Woman was written nearly two years ago now, about the moment I realised I was capable of queer attraction after years of trying to box myself into straight relationships. I found a sense of joy and relief in the fantasy of intimacy with someone who may experience life with a body / sense of gender like my own, and it became this intense escapist fantasy from the reality of my life in a straight relationship that I didn’t yet know how to leave.

“So I just wanted the video to somehow capture the feeling of this ‘fantasy’, but at the same time turn the trope of objectifying women in music videos on its head and portray women in a really honest, beautiful and unfiltered way.

“Chloe de Brito came on board to help me bring this vision to life, shooting and co-directing with me; coming up with different scenes and locations to create the vibe I was looking for.

“In order to find the people for the clip, I basically just advertised that I was making this kind of video and needed a lot of female / non binary / femme identifying people to feature in it, and allowed anyone that was keen on the idea to be a part of it!

“There were no real guidelines on who was selected for it at all, I just wanted people to feature in it if they felt the word ‘woman’ at all could describe them and their identity / body – because the whole point was that I would be creating a diverse & honest illustration of what ‘women’ are, a kind of subtle rebellion from the tropes of femininity and heteronormativity.”
