Madonna has rejected calls for her to boycott her performance at this year’s Eurovision contest in Israel. The pop star released a statement addressing her scheduled performance at Tel Aviv, sharing: “I’ll never stop playing music to suit someone’s political agenda nor will I stop speaking out against violations of human rights wherever in the world they may be.”

“My heart breaks every time I hear about the innocent lives that are lost in this region and the violence that is so often perpetuated to suit the political goals of people who benefit from this ancient conflict. I hope and pray that we will soon break free from this terrible cycle of destruction and create a new path towards peace,” she added.

Madonna’s appearance at Eurovision was announced back in April. Her appearance is expected to cost around $1m, and will be covered by Canadian billionaire Sylvan Adams. Adams has financed momentous events and concerts in the passing years in support of Israel and battle boycott movements.

“I’m excited and proud to host Madonna in Israel,” Adams shared in a statement with the the Jerusalem Post at the time of the announcement.

“I believe her performance, accompanied by dozens of professional backup dancers, will make a significant contribution to the success of the event and to the strengthening of Israel’s positive branding in the world.”
