The Goo Goo Dolls have been an adored rock band since 1985. It’s only fitting that they return triumphantly with their tenth album Magnetic, a record that still echoes their past while also presenting something new for the next generation of Dolls fans.
Firstly, Magnetic ushers in a new sound that is both multi-layered and upbeat. Growth and progression are necessary to stay relevant in the music world, something the Dolls understand and succeed at. Lyrics like ‘You’re gonna dance “til the morning to the rebel beat” symbolises this upbeat affirmation.
This new collection of songs shows more attention to incorporating new effects, keyboard and vocals. Lead single ‘Rebel Beat’ is an anthem designed specifically for radio, featuring John Rzeznik’s crisp tenor and a sing along chorus reminiscent of 90’s alternative style.
‘Caught In This Storm’ is fuelled by guitar equipped with a dance rhythm. ‘Come To Me’ features acoustic guitar, keyboards and backing vocals to create a magical atmosphere. Rzeznik obviously has crafted these new songs with more technical proficiency than ever before.
The most experimental tracks are those lead by bassist, Robby Takac. ‘Bringing On The Light’ is a powerful, heavy track equipped with guitar and a brilliant melody. ‘Bulletproofangel’ runs on piano and possesses great melodic structure. The majority of songs are fast paced, laced with romantic themes and the classic feel of a journey.
The Goo Goo Dolls have created more textured songs both lyrically and melodically; these multi-layered tracks create a cohesively strong album.
