Marilyn Manson has been tapped to star in a new HBO series, with the shock-rocker set to appear in The New Pope.

In addition to his career as one of the most prominent “shock-rockers” of the ’90s, Marilyn Manson has also carved out a rather overlooked acting career.

Whether it was appearing as a porn actor in David Lynch’s Lost Highway or ‘The Stranger’ in Jawbreaker, Manson soon moved on to more respectable roles, including appearances in Sons Of AnarchyCalifornication, and the 2017 crime film, Let Me Make You A Martyr.

However, the famed musician has now scored himself a new role, joining the cast of The New Pope.

According to Variety, HBO have released promotional images of The New Pope, showing both Marilyn Manson and actress Sharon Stone as members of the cast.

At this stage, not much is known about the new series, though it is a follow-up to Paolo Sorrentino’s 2016 series, The Young Pope, which starred Jude Law, and Diane Keaton.

To celebrate the news, Manson took to Instagram to share a doctored image of the 1999 film Being John Malkovich, written about John Malkovich, who will also be joining the cast of the new series as the titular New Pope.

“After being in the Vatican with John Malkovich, it seemed like the only Catholic thing to do,” Manson wrote, undoubtedly confusing people due to his links with the Church of Satan.

Oddly, Marilyn Manson’s role in Let Me Make You A Martyr was also that of a hitman named Pope. Maybe there’s a bit of a theme going on here?

In related news, Marilyn Manson revealed that his upcoming album is “more than half” completed, noting it features a collaboration with US outlaw country musician Shooter Jennings.

“I felt like it was a good time for a change,” Marilyn Manson explained. “And I became friends with Shooter.”

“He’s a musical genius. Shooter, he kind of reminds me of The Dude from The Big Lebowski… But we have this different vibe where I don’t have to really tell him what I’m thinking.”

“I didn’t know this, but he was a fan of what I did growing up, also underneath his father, Waylon Jennings. So he adds a completely different element.”
