Earlier this year Massive Attack celebrated the 20th anniversary of Mezzanine by encoding it into DNA. Now six months later, the album is being reissued as cans of matte black spray paint with the DNA inside.
Each can contains around one million copies of the album according to a press release. When the album was encoded into DNA, the group said it “could be an answer to the problem of archiving the increasing amount of information that the world is creating.”
Mezzanine is the first full album to be encoded into DNA, and the second largest file ever encoded into DNA. In the press release Massive Attacks 3D said ““It’s a creative way to store your back catalogue, although DNA-encoded spray paint is unlikely to be adopted by street artists seeking anonymity.” – A reference to the consistent rumours he is infamous street artist Banksy.

It’s unclear how you can listen to the DNA versions of the album, but luckily there’s also a couple of more typical reissues of the album due out next month. There is currently not much information on when the cans will be available, but we do know they’ll be super limited. Check out the video for Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” below.
