This year has seen Sydney based musician Le Pie quickly establish herself as one artist to watch, thanks to a string of stunning attention grabbing singles ‘Secrets’ followed by ‘Josephine’.

Weaving modern day garage guitar pop with 60s girl group rhythms and harmonies, Le Pie is now gearing up to unveil her band new debut EP release titled And He Said Honey, You Look So Fine – out independently August 27th.

Le Pie spent her youth as both a drummer and front woman for various punk bands, screaming and smashing her way across the stage of any grimy pub or dingy bar that would let her in. Staying true her DIY ethos, this new EP sees the multi instrumentalist play every instrument on the the record.

To celebrate the release of And He Said Honey, You Look So Fine, Le Pie gave us an early stream of the EP and took us inside the world of this exciting new Aussie talent. For more info on Le Pie visit her Facebook page and to grab a copy of her EP (out next week) pop by Bandcamp.

The Beginning Of Le Pie

“Le Pie began purely from moving to Sydney and having nobody to jam with 😞 haha but true. I had previously been in a band with my brother and sister on the South Coast but I flew the co-op and moved to Sydney so the band kinda fizzled out.”

The Response To Le Pie

“It’s been kind of overwhelming actually, I guess it’s a little weird to be mucking around on instruments in your bedroom with no intention releasing anything then all of a sudden you do release it and lots of people are digging it and having really huge opinions about it.”

Moving From Being In A Punk Band To 60s Tinged Pop

“I don’t really feel like there is a huge different between the genres, I really feel as though a lot of punk music is just a sped up/stripped back version of that early rock n roll. It’s probably more noticeable when you start pulling songs apart and putting them back together with different production. Like, I have always thought ‘Sheena is a punk rocker’ by The Ramones sounds like a faster version of ‘Wendy’ by The Beach Boys.”

Favourite Unrelated 60s Pop Act Le Pie Thinks We Should Know

“Go check out P.P. Arnold, she does a really great live version of Cat Stevens’ ‘First Cut Is The Deepest’ at the Beat Club, she has a killer husky voice!”

The Debut EP

“It’s being released August 27th and is called ‘and he said honey, you like so fine’ which is a line out of the Sonic Youth song Washing Machine. It was actually recorded at the start of 2014 with a friend of mine, Ben Moore from Harvest Recordings.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to release it as I was a bit nervous releasing something that was literally all me (I wrote all the parts and played all the instruments on the recording) so it just sat on my computer for a year and then my friend Nathan (now my manager) and I were sitting at Brighton Up bar after a gig one night and I was drunk enough to tell him I’d been recording some stuff and let him take a listen to a track I had on my phone…he straight up just said ‘I’m gonna manage you, we’re gonna put this out’..so yeah, that’s how that happened haha.”

Plans For The Next 12 Months

“Next 12 months is pretty jam packed, I have a million demo tracks on my computer right now so I’m heading back into the studio to record another EP, we have the current EP launch tour about to kick off and a showcase at Bigsound, also a few festival gigs coming up soon and hopefully a U.S. tour in the works for next year. It’s GO GO GO!”
