The first acts of the Melbourne Music Week 2014 lineup have been announced.
Following on from a huge 2013, Melbourne Music Week is back for its fifth year with a bigger than ever program of daytime and night time events crossing music, art, film and design. Featuring 250 local and international artists, 110 events and 40 locations, the 2014 program will also showcase an impressive new flagship venue.
Following the installation of KUBIK Melbourne, Where?House at the Argus Building and The Residence on the banks of the Yarra, the Queen Victoria Market (QVM) is this year’s flagship venue. The iconic location will be transformed into a dynamic space of cutting-edge installations and programming.
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said MMW enhances the city’s reputation as the music capital of Australia.
“MMW continues to work with the local industry to put on a music event like no other,” the Lord Mayor said.
“QVM is a Melbourne icon loved by locals and tourists alike for its diversity, atmosphere, culture and history. MMW at QVM will add an exciting element to the market, bringing more people and vitality to the market precinct.
“Last year, the MMW Hub attracted 25,000 people and we are expecting even more at the QVM hub this year. MMW will attract new visitors to the market during the day and night. The event generates $2.2 million for the local economy so this is good news for businesses.”
MMW opening night at QVM (Friday 14 November) will be packed with performances from an all-Melbourne line up. Melbourne darlings Architecture In Helsinki will headline with Total Giovanni and Rainbow Connection DJs also bringing their talent to the table. Architecture In Helsinki will be celebrating the release of their fifth album ‘NOW + 4EVA’ released earlier this year.
The celebrations at QVM continue with a day-to-night program on Saturday, November 15, to launch Cut Copy’s compilation ‘Oceans Apart’ showcasing the best of Melbourne’s current crop of live dance music and club culture. Featuring an electro-funk DJ set from legendary locals Cut Copy and the carefully curated sounds of local talent; Andras & Oscar, Roland Tings, No Zu, World’s End Press, Sleep D, Speed Painters and Nile Delta.
Chair of Marketing at City of Melbourne, Councillor Beverley Pinder–Mortimer said MMW is an event for all ages and all musical tastes.
“We are overwhelmed by the world class musical talent here in Melbourne,” Cr Pinder-Mortimer said. “MMW is a tribute to this talent and this year we are again working with our partners to ensure more than 75 per cent of the artists are from Victoria.”
Speaker TV will celebrate their sixth birthday with an all-ages daytime event on Sunday 17 at QVM. Melbourne hip-hop up-n-comer AllDay will lead the celebrations with support from L-Fresh The Lion, Baro and The DYE. Later that night, Novel will take over with deep house act Dusky and Ten Walls (Live) who return to Melbourne after touring Europe with their disco infected house jams.
Beyond MMW at QVM, atmospheric and ethereal A Winged Victory For The Sullen, will perform a beautiful eight-piece show at the Melbourne Recital Centre, Saturday 15 November. Renowned for their enchanting scores from Sophia Coppola’s film Marie-Antoinette, the post-classical musicians will play their latest album Atomos composed for contemporary choreographer Wayne McGregor’s dance piece.
In their first Australian performance since 1975, legendary German electronic music pioneers, Tangerine Dream, will perform on Melbourne Town Hall’s Grand Organ, Sunday 16 November. Tangerine Dream has been at the forefront of music creation for more than four decades. Edgar Froese and his collaborators are central in the development of krautrock, psychedelia, electronic dance music and new music. Supported by Melbourne locals Black Cab, this MMW exclusive performance presented in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Australia will be part of Tangerine Dream’s Phaedra Farewell Tour.
Proving there is so much more to MMW than just music, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) will present this year’s Cinemix with one of Australia’s best-loved bands, The Church, in a live score performance specially curated by the band to Jean Cocteau’s avant-garde film Blood of a Poet (1930), Friday 21 November.
MMW partners again with the annual Face The Music industry conference, Friday 14 and Saturday 15 November. The latest addition to this year’s list of international key note speakers is UK’s Jen Long (ex-BBC Radio). Named as one of the most influential young voices in music by Q Magazine in 2012, Jen Long will be joining Steve Albini and many other delegates from Australia’s contemporary music community who meet each year to exchange ideas, make new connections and support each other’s creative and professional development at Face The Music.
