Wow! Are Dave Mustaine, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich set to bury the hatchet on one of the biggest feuds in metal music? It appears that hell is starting to freeze over because the Megadeth front man says he’s been talking to the powerhouse duo behind Metallica about forming a supergroup. Mustaine was infamously kicked out of Metallica just before they recorded their 1983 debut Kill “em All, ostensibly because there wasn’t enough room in the band for all three egos, a fact they all now cheerfully admit to.
Mustaine went on to form Megadeth and there was a fierce rivalry between the two bands for almost 20 years. Now Mustaine reveals that he’s approached the two about forming a supergroup with Megadeth bassist David Ellefson. He told a Texas radio station “I’ve talked to Lars and James about me and David [Ellefson, MEGADETH bassist] doing a supergroup record with Lars and James. Well, James never said ‘no,’ but it’s still kind of out there in the air. I’m gonna keep hammering on him. It’s on my bucket list.”
In an interview several years ago when he was asked if he was ‘glad’ that Mustaine was kicked out of the band, James Hetfield admitted that at the time, he had to go. He said “I don’t know if ‘glad’ is the right word, but it was necessary. There would have been myself, Lars and [Dave] all trying to drive and it would have been this triangulated mess. It’s obvious that he had the same drive as us — he went on to do great things in Megadeth”. Watch this space for a supergroup that would have metal fans in ecstasy.
