Missy Higgins has lent her support to chart-topping musician Billie Eilish, after a six-year-old video of Eilish covering Higgins’ ‘Secret’ went viral.
Early last week, The New York Times decided to do a deep dive into the world of US musician Billie Eilish, covering her for their ‘Diary Of A Song’ series.
Focusing on her single ‘Bury A Friend’, The New York Times‘ research included interviews with the likes of Eilish herself, along with collaborators and family members as they look into the roots of her musical history.
Along the way though, the musicians’s mother, Maggie Baird, reminisced on some of Billie Eilish’s early performances, including one at a homeschool talent show.
Accompanied by footage of the performance, the clip sees the then-11-year-old singer performing a cover of Missy Higgins’ 2007 track, ‘Secret’.

Armed with an acoustic guitar, and backed by some rather out-of-time clapping, few could have assumed that just six years later, this young musician would be topping charts all over the world.
However, while the video appears to have gone viral, attracting countless viewers over the last week, it also appears to have caught the attention of Missy Higgins herself, who took to Twitter to congratulate the young pop icon.
I’ve been really getting into @billieeilish‘s new album the last week and just found out she covered my song ’Secret’ when she was 11! Kind of blows my mind for a lot of reasons. Congrats Billie on your #1 album here in Oz! xhttps://t.co/tYyVjtTI0B

I’ve been really getting into Billie Eilish’s new album the last week and just found out she covered my song ’Secret’ when she was 11!” Higgins wrote on Twitter. “Kind of blows my mind for a lot of reasons.”
“Congrats Billie on your #1 album here in Oz!”
In fact, Billie Eilish’s debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, has been so successful that it managed to hit the top of the charts in 14 other countries, including the US, UK, and Canada.
While her rise to fame has been relatively fast, it goes to show that Eilish’s fame was secured years earlier when she first picked up that guitar. Whatever the case, she clearly has great taste in Aussie music, and we’re sort of hoping there might be some more covers that see the light of day some time.
In related news, Eilish is set to hit up Australia next month for Groovin The Moo, along with a number of sideshow dates.
