Welcome to our midweek mixtape #59, featuring the killer track ‘Hungover Again’ from Evil Eddie’s new album Welcome To Flavour Country, who is currently on a massive national tour. We’re super excited about the sneak peak from Yo La Tengo’s forthcoming thirteenth studio album, we have a collaboration between Dune and Spende, plus new tracks from Eels, Sherlock’s Daughter and The Red Lights.
Evil Eddie – Hungover Again
Opening up with a sentence we can all relate too (“Got a hangover again…”), Eddie touches on his softer side in ‘Hungover Again’, giving us a run through of some events that will sound ever so familiar to most, if not all of us. The theme to many Sunday mornings, the acoustic backed anecdote wittingly expresses some of the Queenslander’s hangover joys. WARNING: May induce regrettable memories of last night.
Yo La Tengo – Before We Run
New Jersey cult-heroes Yo La Tengo have just announced the upcoming release of their thirteenth studio album Fade, which will be released through Matador on January 15th. But before it gets released, you can hear the first cut from their first album since 2009’s Popular Songs; ‘Before We Run’. Brimming with colourful textures from start to finish, the Georgia Hubley-helmed track features a stuttering rhythm, while layers upon layers of strings build throughout. It’s classic Yo La Tengo, and no doubt Fade will quickly announce itself as one of next year’s standout albums.
Dune via Spender – Black Sand
This eclectic track is a collaboration between Melbourne artists Dune and Spender. The former is the project of Melbourne vocalist Jade McCrae, while the latter is the musical project headed by Tom Spender. With the vocals of Ms McCrae it’s pretty hard to go wrong really, but the most exciting this about this track is the setting in which she is singing. The electronic based rhythms and synth textures coupled with McCrae’s incredible voice create an irresistibly ethereal atmosphere. Following an unconventional structure, above all, the variety of textures make this a stand out track.
Eels – Peach Blossom
In typical Eels fashion, their latest cut ‘Peach Blossom’ goes through many musical peaks and troughs all in the course of a few minutes. Heavy, jolting guitars open the track and quickly morph to a much slower riff that is then re-juxtaposed with darker tones and once again with a quiet synth sound. Taken off Wonderful, Glorious, the band’s upcoming tenth album (yes, you read right: they’re up to double digits now) this tune is sure to satisfy Eels fans until the record’s release in February of next year.
Sherlock’s Daughter- Giordano Bruno
With a tinkling, long-winding introduction to the heart of the song, Sherlock’s Daughter continues to hypnotise with their latest single, “Giordano Bruno”. The angelic-come-eerie vocals of Tanya Horo carries the journey on a gentle build-up of percussion for an even gentler fall of pedal-heavy guitar and soft hand claps. The sudden change in tempo towards the end promises some space to dance.
The Red Lights – Ghosts
‘Ghosts’ is the latest single from local Melbourne four-piece indie rock band The Red Lights off their debut EP ‘Not In This Town’. A short punchy track they certainly doen’t waste anytime launching straight into lyrics that seem to echo sentiments of young love. Super catchy, jangly, indie rock guitars and pounding drums lead to a chorus that makes you want to move. See you on the dance floor!
