This week Sam Wass and Monica Hann from Melbourne’s community radio station PBS 106.7fm (www.pbsfm.org.au) have taken over our mixtape in celebration of the incredible line up for Drive Live 2013!

Drive Live 2013 will be taking over the airwaves from Monday February 4th to Friday the 8th during drivetime between 5 and 7pm, playing to both a live in-studio audience, and across the PBS airwaves. Each afternoon it’s three acts, three studios, one drivetime show for a full week, featuring blistering live in‐studio performances.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Cut Throat Boogie

I don’t know exactly what Ambrose is going on about in this song, but aurally it sounds like they’re stabbing someone to death inside a giant oil tank somewhere outside of sunbury and dancing around the corpse like it’s a bonfire. Or maybe there’s a bonfire inside the oil tank and the corpse is on the bonfire…

No Zu – Emotion

This energetic, eclectic track from No Zu is a great example of their musical magic.  With a host of different influences audible, the music is patched together to create something totally unique and wonderful.

The Townhouses – Heart Sick

Melbournes Leigh Hannah aka The Townhouses makes beautifully lo-fi experimental electronic music.  This particular tune from his first full length album, Disapora, includes live instruments mixed together with vocal samples all smoothed together into a lush instrumental soundscape.

The UV Race – I’m a Pig

Whilst some might call it elementary, ‘I’m a Pig’ is nothing less than a cacophony of UV Race sounds; screeching guitar,  kooky keys degenerating into a piano bashing, and so much more, all set to a driving beat.  Marcus stars as the unlikely hero telling us all he’s “a pig take a dig… OINK OINK OINK OINK..” so on and so forth. It’s the best thing you can do with your spare 1 minute 30 seconds.

Pony Face – Alabama

Pony Face’s new record ‘Hypnotised’ has received numerous positive reviews since its release, many of which point to the band’s sound reminiscent of Dinosaur Jnr. ‘Alabama’ begins with chugging guitar and drums locked in to cement this driving force before introducing intricate, phased hooks throughout. All of these elements teamed with Simon’s heart-wrenchingly genuine vocal delivery definitely make this track in particular a stand out.

Fatti Frances – So Bad

Fatti Frances does RnB in a way that doesn’t really appear anywhere else in the Australian music scene.  The whole Sweaty EP is a perfectly strung together pack of songs about love and lust backed by some sweet percussion.  ‘So Bad’ stands out from the back with the repeating chorus and enticing rhythm.  Hypnotising.

La Bastard – Call Of The Wild

La Bastard are definitely a band to watch out for in 2013 if their new record is anything to go by – ‘Call of the Wild’ is the first single from their latest Off the Hip release ‘Tales From the Beyond’ and it ticks all the boxes with its driving beats, swampy guitar licks and howling female vocals, channeling rockabilly, 60’s and surf rock vibes but without giving in to clichés.
