Due to seriously high demand, local electronic pioneers Black Cab have announced a second and final Melbourne to launch their brand new single ‘Uniforms’ to take place at Howler on Thursday May 5.
These Melbourne shows will be the first since the group’s “night-winning” midnight performance at Golden Plains festival and follow Uniforms’ strong play on triple j, Double J, RRR, FBi and RTR.
To celebrate the upcoming shows, the guys have curated an eclectic mixtape featuring the music inspiring them right now – check it out below.
Black Sabbath – ‘Tomorrow’s Dream’
I saw Black Sabbath play in Melbourne last night. I’d seen them before fronted by the late, great Ronnie James Dio but seeing Ozzy up there was pretty special. I wish they’d gotten their shit sorted with Bill Ward for this ‘The End’ tour. One of my favourite bands ever. Probably the second greatest rhythm section in rock history.
Derrick Carter’s Sound Patrol Orchestra – ‘Tripping Among The Stars (remix)’
I’m a massive fan of pretty much everything Derrick has ever done, but this remix is special as there’s a cool Australian connection. My mate Casey Rice who now lives and works in Melbourne was a huge part of the Chicago scene during the 90s and co-produced this. There’s a couple of dudes from Tortoise playing on it with Chez Damier, DJ Heather and Derrick all doing vocals! Absolutely massive. Look out for Casey’s solo project Designer, too.
Circle Sky – ‘Reveal’
This is the new project of Richard Norris’ (Beyond The Wizard’s Sleeve). Their first 12” came out for Record Store Day just gone and it’s probably my favourite record of the year so far. Just incredible energy.
Doug Jerebine – ‘Midnight Sun’
This appeared on a compilation last year ‘A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding In Your Mind – The Wizards Of Oz’ – a Gaz Cobain-curated collection of rare psychedelic cuts from Australia and New Zealand. This tune, originally recorded in 1969 by Jerebine, was unearthed and released officially for the first time in 2012. It sounds like some rare Hendrix outtake or something. An incredible jam.
Miss Nicky Trax – ‘Acid In The House’
Ryan Grieve from Canyons recommended this record to me in an interview once. Absolutely killer. A couple slices of cheese with every serving, but what a build. Serious attitude and a sick vocal.
Death In Vegas – ‘Moe Tucker’
DIV’s Richard Fearless is my musical hero and this was a track on a deluxe edition of their last record. The title pays homage to the second greatest drummer of all time and kind of set the tone for RF’s more recent, superb solo acid-drenched 12”s.
Bo Diddley – ‘Elephant Man’
The aforementioned Mr. Fearless put a mixtape together for an article I was writing and this was the first song on there. I’d not really heard any of Bo’s post-1960’s stuff and this was an amazing discovery. The man absolutely shreds. What a phenomenal guitar player.
Britta Phillips – ‘Drive’
A lot of Luna/Dean & Britta fans have been waiting for the Britta solo record with baited breath. From what I’ve heard so far it’s going to kill.
Snapper – ‘Cause Of You’
New Zealand’s greatest ever group. Captain Peter Gutteridge was a genius in every sense of the word. Everything he ever released was exceptional and fans/bands like Wooden Shjips, Yo La Tengo and Stereolab will testify to that.
Bardo Pond – ‘Tommy Gun Angel’
One of the most consistently awesome groups ever, I reckon. Stunningly beautiful records and untouchable live force. I worship these guys.
Pete Townshend – ‘Baba O’Riley (demo)’
The Who really changed the game for me as a kid and going back through these early Townshend demos from the early 70’s has been pretty eye-opening. They’re these iconic, bombastic rock songs stripped right down to DIY synth loops and drum machines. PT was really operating on another level back in those days.
