Have you heard the news? HOLY FUCK are Australia bound this May. HOLY FUCK, right?
This will be the band’s first visit since 2011 to which they will be performing as part of the Groovin The Moo Festival which has already sold out in Bendigo, Maitland and Oakbank, as well as a string of shows across the nation.
If you can’t tell, we’re pretty damn excited to move our feet to their overly infectious indie-dance meets krautrock robotic sounds. So much so, that we’ve asked the crew to compile a mixtape containing their favourite Australian and New Zealand tracks to get things warmed up.
Unsurprisingly, the enigmatic Toronto outfit have hand-picked some absolute crackers spanning post-rock cult classics to surfy-dream psychedlica.
Dig our HOLY FUCK Aussie/New Zealand programmed mixtape here:
Total Control – ‘See More Glass’
‘See More Glass’ is the opening track to Total Control’s 2011 album Henge Beat.
Comprised of members from local bands Eddy Current Suppression Ring, UV Race, Straightjacket Nation, and the Collapse, the success of Total Control has almost surpassed each members’ other bands.
Total Control – ‘Retiree’
Released on 7” in 2009, Retiree displays Total Control at their eeriest. Cold and calculating synth heavy punk rock. Though not necessarily a ‘new’ sound, Total Control know how to produce that genuine 80s new-wave punk noise.
Dennis Garcia – ‘You Can Be Anything’
Dennis Garcia is a pioneer of Australian electronic music. During his 1978 visit to Australia, David Bowie recruited Garcia to play keyboards in his touring band.
A very fascinating musician, in the 1970s Garcia received a government grant to create music using his heartbeat and physical movements.
Garcia was one of the first Australians to get his hands on some of our more overlooked instruments including the mellotrons, Theremin and Moog synthesisers.
The Clean – ‘Point That Thing Somewhere Else’
New Zealand’s prime answer to post-punk arrives in the form of The Clean. The band are said to pioneer the ‘Dunedin Sound’ of the south. This classic track resonates emphatically with the cold, punctured anti-psychedlica The Velvet Underground perfected. A cult favourite and one of their best.
The Chills- ‘Pink Frost’
Following in the vein of the ‘Dunedin Sound’, The Chills are too and a bleak indie rock meets post punk band from the south of New Zealand, lead by Martin Phillipps. Released in 1984, this track is unquestionably the band’s greatest and most recognisable to date. The sound and aesthetic The Chills encapsulated with ‘Pink Frost’ was ahead of its time and something many post-punk outfits today strive to replicate.
Beaches- ‘Sandy’
Teetering toward a more surf-pop sound, this is the exactly the kind of jam you want soundtracking your summer as you crash the beach. Establishing themselves as one of Australia’s premiere groups, ‘Sandy’ is a finer example of a contemporary spin on psychedelic surf rock. It never ceases to amaze how well this band blend their vocals and sound to produce an incredibly smooth sound.
Beaches – ‘In a While’
An utter pinnacle from their 2010 EP release Eternal Sphere, ‘In a While’ is a brilliant example of glistening psychedelic rock at it’s finest. Without the need for any cement lyrics, the Melbourne ladies allow their dream like voices weave in and out of the sonic reverberations.
