Back in October last year Emma Donovan and The PutBacks brought together some very special guests to release a very special 7″. Titled Blackfella Whitefella, the release supported the massive grassroots movement led by SOS Blak Australia, an organization dedicated to supporting Aboriginal communities in remote Western Australia currently under threat of closure.

In support celebration of Blackfella Whitefella, the Hopestreet Recordings team created a playlist of Australian protest songs showcasing a range of songs including authentic Aussie rockers Midnight Oil to new and upcoming talent, Sampa the Great.

“The discrimination and outright racism towards Australia’s Indigenous people has lasted for centuries, and still in the apparently forward thinking 21st century we continue to do it. From Uncle Jack’s refusal of cab rides to threats of displacement of Indigenous people’s homes, it’s still obviously a major issue.”Explains HopeStreet’s Janelle McKenzie.

“In 2015 we released a 7” record to support the work of SOS BLAK, whose campaigns fight this displacement of Indigenous homes. It featured our artist Emma Donovan singing alongside legends Archie Roach, Tim Rogers and Joelistics, with all proceeds going to SOS BLAK. ”

“Hopefully things change, but at the moment it’s inspiring to see artists speak aloud about this issue. All we can do is stand up against those who discriminate.”
