The legends at WAM (West Australian Music) have just wrapped up their recent ‘Song of the Year’ Awards and for 2015/16 we were excited to find out this year’s winner was the ridiculously talented hip hop artist Beni Bjah for his song ‘Survivor’.

What made it especially sweet was the marking a significant moment in the competition’s history, with Beni being the first-ever Indigenous artist to take the peak honours. ‘Survivor’ is the title track from Bjah’s incredibly moving debut LP which was released independently and is now available via Bandcamp.

According to WAM ” Beni Bjah’s hard-hitting wake-up call explores complex racial and cultural issues facing Australia, impressing a pool of industry professionals that judged all songs anonymously. His profoundly unapologetic lyrics and well-crafted songwriting stood tall amongst some of WA’s most applauded artists.”

To celebrate the recognition of Beni Bjah’s release and all the other incredible talents that were shortlisted, WAM has curated a compilation featuring some of WA’s finest which you can check out below. For more info on everything WAM pop by www.wam.org.au.
