In what will go down as the worst prediction in musical history, Eminem once famously took a shot at Moby with the dismissive “let go, it’s over, nobody listens to techno.”
Of course, since then EDM has become the biggest musical genre in the universe, and EDM beefs are replacing hip hip ones, if a recent episode of the ‘Rave Curious’ podcast is any indication.
The beef between Aphex Twin and Moby goes way back to a 1993 tour.
Moby explained on the podcast that he was initially a fan of Richard D. James’ music, but it was “hard to continue to like someone’s music when you know they hold you in contempt.” He claims that James repeatedly slammed him during the tour, recalling an interview the musician gave where he questioned why Moby was booked on the same tour as him, saying he is “just a buffoon.”
The barbs clearly stung Moby; this isn’t the first time he has addressed them. In his memoir Porcelain, he writes:
“I wanted to like Aphex Twin, because I loved his records. But he rarely spoke to anyone, and when he gave interviews he criticised me for playing guitar on stage.”
“He called me an elitist in the press, when actually I just had crippling tour-bus-inspired insomnia.”
