From the creators of Coachella comes Cruel World: a one day festival with an absolutely loaded post-punk and new wave artist roster. It goes down in Los Angeles this May.

Pulling in Morrissey, Bauhaus, Blondie and Devo is pretty impressive in itself. But add in Echo & the Bunnymen, The Psychedelic Furs, Public Image Ltd. and Gary Numan, and holy freakin’ heck what a lineup.

But it doesn’t end there. The one-day Los Angeles festival also boasts The Church, Violent Femmes, English Beat and Soft Cell’s Marc Almond. Plenty of 21st century post-punk/new wave revivalists will also appear, including She Wants Revenge, Cold Cave, TR/ST and The KVB.

It’s all courtesy of Goldenvoice Productions, the company behind the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. You might recall the Goldenvoice-presented Desert Trip festival from 2016. It was nicknamed “Oldchella” for occupying the same grounds as Coachella, but catering to Baby Boomers with headliners the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney.

The promoters are obviously feeling confident about the Cruel World lineup given the festival’s happening fewer than three months after being announced. You’ve got until Saturday May 2 to gather the funds to get to LA’s Dignity Health Sport Park. Tickets go on sale 7.30am Friday February 14 (AEDT).

There’s likely to be some backlash regarding Morrissey’s top billing. Justified backlash too – sure he led one of the preeminent bands of the era, but The Smiths frontman’s outlook proves increasingly rotten with every passing year. Not only is he a Brexit supporter, but Moz now endorses the far right For Britain party.

As for Coachella, that’s happening from April 10-12 and again from April 17-19. Rage Against the Machine, Frank Ocean and Travis Scott lead the typically bulging lineup. Lana Del Rey, Calvin Harris, Flume and Thom Yorke also have high billing.
