They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder – but what about sexiness? Can an EP be objectively and undeniably sexy?
Because, if it could, the music of Sydney trio Movement would be at the pinnacle of sexiness – in fact, some say the Justin Timberlake hit ‘SexyBack’ was inspired by this very EP.
Okay, not really, but there’s no doubt that Movement are masters of the arts after the lights go out. Their dark, smoky songwriting has been spreading a sensual shadow over listeners since breaking into the light in 2013, and in the 18 minutes contained in their self-titled EP, this shadow grows darker and more intense.
From the first simmering synth to the last, the mysterious trio weave an entrancing spell perfectly curated by an absorbing mix of subtle instrumental loops and soft, spongy vocals.
This is most prevalent and moving on opener ‘Like Lust’, a song that revolves around a hum of pleasure that probably originated from the other side of a closed bedroom door before being lifted by DJ Shadow-esque drum loops into a trance wonderland.
The following tracks continue in a similar trickle of seduction. ‘Ivory’ boasts the moment of highest intensity with a mouth-watering distorted guitar solo, while ‘5:57’ calls for better earphones as the steamy bass melts your insides.
Movement are a nocturnal animal, tentatively emerging from the shadows to hunt and seduce in the night. As the sunlight pierces through the bedroom curtain the next morning and the echoes of Movement ring around in your ears, you’ll be begging for the shadow to descend on you again.
