The latest offering from Sydney oddballs Richard In Your Mind is an eclectic, quirky fusion of electronic and psychedelic sounds, that never takes itself too seriously.

With their third album due out next year,  the whacky six-piece have given the first taste of what’s to come, although the teaser EP seems a bit too diverse to draw any real conclusions.

The title track is an enjoyable, weird affair filled with jangly guitars, soaring synths, erratic drumming, and down-right strange lyrics. The song descends into madness in the final minute, with heavily distorted vocals and a deep, driving bass line.

‘Secret Message’ is much more simple, providing an undeniably fun and upbeat jam that’s over far too quickly, but not before some catchy  “la la la’s”.

‘Valis’  shifts the genre towards more instrumental, lo-fi territory, bringing some sitars along for the ride. The song manages to become somewhat soothing and even relaxing, contrasting with the other energetic, frantic songs that its surrounded by.

Frontman Richard Cartwright once again displays a different, more restrained side on ‘Stunned’, featuring acoustic guitar accompanied b an abundance of. However, the song stretches out over nearly seven minutes, and doesn’t really build to anywhere significant across this time.

After a prolonged moment of silence, a ‘secret’ track of sorts begins, with extravagant and over-the-top vocals centred around food.

Amusing, self-aware lines such as “We have become so good at talking about food / That we think we don’t need to eat food anymore”, help to bring the EP to a fitting close.

At times, Mozzarella is weird, at others it’s entirely silly, but it’s hard to deny the Sydney-siders when you can tell they’re having so much fun.
