If you are already feeling overwhelmed by sheer amount isolation viewing at your disposal, stop reading. An Internet Archive has appeared that boasts a treasure trove of VHS recordings of MTV’s golden years in the ’80s and ’90s.
I don’t know about you, but isolation has incited feelings of nostalgia, and an inclination to seek out comfort. I find myself desperate to numb my brain with garbage shows like Life of Ryan or MXC. This archive is the perfect remedy for a mind begging to be ushered into oblivion. As BrooklynVegan reports, the MTV archive features hundreds of hours’ worth of footage online — all free to watch.
Entering the archive is like travelling back in time — it has everything. The “’80s MTV VHS Recordings 1981 to 1989 Collection”. features network promos, cringe-inducing outdated TV commercials, and of course, music. It begins with the historic genesis of the channel, which saw the ay of The Buggles’ apt hit ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ permeate the waves on August 1st, 1981.
If you’re working from home and have already consumed every soothing episode of Chef’s Table, this is the perfect viewing material to pop on in the background. If you’re not working from home, we suggest you make a spectacle of it, whip out your baggiest carpenter jeans, unleash the Air Jordans and wholly commit to the vibes.
You can find the archive here.
