It’s been a pretty grim couple of weeks for Aussie live music venues with Sydney, Perth and Adelaide are all set to lose important performing spaces, thankfully today we’ve got some fantastic news, a brand-spanking venue is set to open its doors in March.
Making it’s way to Victoria’s second biggest city Geelong, popular live music venue The Workers Club will expand to the coastal city west of Melbourne, joining forces with music bookers Spinning Half to open the city’s latest newest live music and entertainment venue, entitled The Workers Club Geelong.
Calling 90 – 92 Little Malop Street home as of late March, The Workers Club will offer a top-notch live music experience and culture for artists and punters alike, and that’s not all, they’ll be opening a kitchen too.
Spinning Half director Steven Nichols spoke of the new live music venue, “We are driven to provide Geelong with a sustainable and reliable music venue that can service the country’s touring artists, along with showcasing local talent, while focused on helping grow The Workers Club brand.”
The Workers Club Melbourne co-owner John O’Brien excitedly adds, “With Spinning Half’s years of local experience and street cred, it is obvious that us pivotonians love good music, food and drink here in the city of dreams, we are confident that this will tie in with The Workers Club philosophy and look forward to sharing our mutual love of music.”
This is a major win for the folk of Geelong its surrounds, the region have spawned an endless amount of brilliant musicians (King Gizz, anyone?) providing a small to medium space for up-and-coming as well as established artists to perform.
Australia’s live music scene at large has had some victories in 2015. Melbourne scored a live music venue that specialises in dumplings, not to mention Little & Olver, Shadow Electric band room that powering into full-time, a Cuban themed pop-up bar named El Coco as well as the reopening of Brunswick’s Railway Hotel, in Sydney The Basement has been revamped as well as the opening of Bandroom(which replaced the FBi Social), while Brisbane has witnessed an explosion of great venues with The Brooklyn Standard, The Brightside, Woolly Mammoth and ex-Powderfinger member’s stunning refurbished WW2 hanger, The Triffid, not to mention the beautiful venue in the Blue Mountains.
