The legacy of Seattle grunge legends Mudhoney has been immortalised with a hulking tunnel boring machine.
Seattle Public Utilities bestowed this honour on the band on Monday, April 12th — unveiling that the boring machine would be emblazoned with the name of Mudhoney following a publicly voted campaign.
“MudHoney was the top vote-getter after more than 35,000 votes were cast to choose a name among the top five finalists,” SPU said in a press release. “Since the late ’80s, Mudhoney, the Seattle-based foursome whose muck-crusted version of rock, shot through with caustic wit and battened down by a ferocious low end, has taken a stand against overflows in our waterways.”
The tunnel will be used to build the Ship Canal Water Quality Project’s storage tunnel. Mudhoney attended the big ass machine’s grand debut. Taking to social media to share a video of the groundbreaking achievement.
“There was the idea that Mudhoney will be digging the shit canal under the ship canal,” bassist Guy Maddison said in the video.
Mudhoney beat out other finalists including Sir Digs-A-Lot, a reference to Seattle rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot, Boris the Plunger, Molly the Mole, and Daphne.
