The Temper Trap have finally dropped their debut single from their eagerly anticipated sophomore album, but can it match the hype? The Melbourne five-piece became the indie-pop darlings of 2010 with their debut album Conditions, producing hit after hit in the forms of ‘Fader’, ‘Love Lost’, and of course ‘Sweet Disposition’. Their success saw them crack the overseas market, particularly the UK, and since taking everyone by storm, the band has been relatively quiet.
Now, having given us a taste with ‘Rabbit Hole’, the band’s first single ‘Need Your Love’ is currently streaming across the Internet to a mostly positive reaction. With one eye on bigger venues, the other on the charts, this key-driven, drum-pounding track is doused in commercial friendliness and clichéd lyrics, but wholly, it’s a decent track. The hooks aren’t as instantly grabbing as songs off Conditions, and the production is cranked to the max, making it cluttered in places, but Dougy Mandagi’s sweeping vocals give the audience exactly what they want in the figure of beautiful, uplifting pop.
