It’s been four years since we’ve seen a follow up to the 2016 album Gore by Deftones, but we’ll “hopefully” be seeing a new album drop in a few months time.
It’s been a while of anticipation for Deftones fans who are eager to see new material come from the alt-metal collective.
Back in February, the band revealed that they were in the mixing process with their new album, and that they had brought back longtime producer Terry Date.
Then, back in April, the outfit noted that they were getting a bit closer to releasing the album, before revealing in May that they were unsure about making deadlines.
Now, drummer Abe Cunningham has noted that the latest album should “hopefully” be dropping in only a few short month, with the release slated for September.
Over the weekend during Download Festival TV, Cunningham noted that the band “actually tracked everything over the summer, last summer” while in the studio. “But we actually just completed everything. … We were down in LA recording, but we mixed up in Seattle.”
He continued by reiterating that Deftones were working again with Terry Date, who helped produce some of their earlier records: “He’s up there [in Seattle] with this whole distancing thing; it was a bit rough, but we figured out a way to kind of do the mixes without being there.”

Admittedly, Cunningham noted that “it’s a lot better when we’re all in the room; we can knock it out quick and argue and do our things,” but that it’s been a bit difficult during COVID-19.
“But, yeah, we just completed that. It’s getting mastered right now, and that’s been the main thing. So it’s been something to do in this strange off time.”
As for the content of the album? Cunningham revealed: “We can’t help but sound like ourselves, but just being back with Terry, there’s certain sounds that we developed with Terry that kind of became sort of our core sounds, and those are back again.”
Then, the news we’ve all been waiting for was teased: “It should be coming along, hopefully, maybe September. I heard something.”
