Get ready for some new tunes to soon be gracing your ears, as Deftones ninth studio album is in its final mixing stages, says drummer Abe Cunningham.

We haven’t had a new album from Deftones since their 2016 Gore which saw hits like ‘Prayers/Triangles’ and ‘Hearts/Wires’, but we should soon seen their newest album come to life, as it’s currently in the mixing stages.

Previously, the American alternative-metal outfit hinted about new music in 2019, but we never saw it come to term. But, after 2019 came and went, the band confirmed that the new album would definitely be arriving in 2020, and we’re close to seeing the likes of it soon.

Talking via an Instagram live stream, drummer Abe Cunningham revealed the status of the forthcoming album. “We’re currently mixing it,” he revealed.

With COVID-19 currently sees everyone following social distancing standards, Cunningham notes that it’s a bit hard to get things going, saying “given the current situation, it’s been a bit difficult to get everyone in the same room. We can’t. So, we’re at least still doing that.”

As the band is edging closer to their record of the longest time between their album, Cunningham thanks his fans for the time they’ve spent waiting: “I wanted to thank you for your patience, obviously, and of course, your interest in that. It’s coming.”

Luckily, we already know a little bit about what’s in store for this new album, as frontman Chino Morino spoke to Kerrang! (via The PRP) that the sound they’re going for will end up being akin to their 2000s White Pony.

“We’re definitely getting into experimental sort of modes, which is the funnest phase that we get into. One of the biggest records in our career is obviously White Pony, and it’s our most commercially successful record as well, but that was also one of our most experimental records, especially for the time when it came out.”

While there is no definite date of release, we can remain hopeful that they do intend to release their ninth album this year. As for when us Aussies can get the chance to see them again since their appearance at Download Festival was cancelled, it’s uncertain.
