Keen for some new Metallica music to grace your ears? Well, drummer Lars Ulrich has said there’s “a very good chance” that a new album could come out of quarantine.

Quarantine has offered up a good chunk of time for us to get down to things we’ve been keen on doing, and luckily for us, this means that musicians have been utilising their downtime by making more music.

We’ve already seen Scorpions reveal that they’ve been working on new tunes, and Run The Jewels have noted that quarantine might see them produce a film. Now, American heavy metal icons Metallica have stepped up to say that there’s “a very good chance” that we could see new music come out of this era of social distancing.

Chatting with Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff, drummer Lars Ulrich discussed the possibility of new tracks during a recent Twitter chat.

Even though everyone in the band has been having to stay apart due to lockdown regulations, Ulrich has remained optimistic, noting how technology has played a fair part of bringing the band together.

“The people that make the software and all the stuff that we use to record are sitting right now trying to figure out how [me] and James [Hetfield, vocals] and Kirk [Hammett, guitar] and Rob [Trujillo, bass] can make a Metallica record from four different locations in four different states. That’s obviously something that we’re very excited about,” exclaimed Ulrich.

When specifically asked if new tunes would spawn from this moment in time, Ulrich didn’t exactly say ‘yes’, but was keen on the possibility, noting that “there’s a very good chance”.

“A lot of that will do with how long the stay at home orders are in place and a lot of that will have to do with if there’s a second wave of the virus,” he began. “Who knows what our world will look like six months from now?”

“But obviously, the one thing you can depend on from creative people, for better or worse, is that they can’t sit still for very long and I can tell you that one these weekly Metallica Zoom sessions we are talking about how we can just be a band again.”

Continuing on, the 56-year-old drummer stated that although nothing is set in stone, him and the rest of the band are “really excited” about what a quarantine record would look like.

“Will there be a Metallica quarantine record?,” he questioned. “I can’t tell you because I can’t tell you how long the quarantine will last, but if you and I and the rest of the world are still sitting here six months or a year from now, I can say there’s a very good chance.”

If you’re keen to check out the rest of Ulrich’s interview with Marc Benioff, you can head here, and listen to Ulrich’s banter about being too old to tour, and joking that one day the fans could just come to their home, instead, as technology continues to advance.
