Ever complained that Triple J plays too much international music and not enough home grown acts as per their mandate? Maybe they’ve listened to you because tonight at an industry event in Melbourne they’ve announced a dedicated digital radio station that will play unearthed artists 24/7. The new station, cleverly called ‘triple j Unearthed’, will be the first radio station in Australia to play only Australian music.

Launched as a on-air band competition in the 90s, Unearthered quickly evolved into the biggest platform in Australia for small bands to have their music heard. The web service was launched in 2006 and hosts over 30,000 artists and 250,000 users.

The new station will be broadcast on digital radio in the five capital cities, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, and will be available online at triplejunearthed.com

Triple J manager Chris Scaddan says “There is so much quality Australian music being made right now and triple j wants to share as much as we can. triple j Unearthed will be unique in that it’s 100% Australian music, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s going to give airplay ti many artists who have never had it before and make it even easier for fans to discover new Australian music.”

The station launches on Wednesday 5th October 2011. Watch the promo video below
