We are now less than a week away from the release of the Rolling Stones newest compilation album, entitled GRRR! , a celebration of the Stones’ lengthy career, marking the 50th anniversary of their first gig. Their inaugural show was played in a jazz club in London back when they were still teenagers, in 1962.
The new best-of is primarily made up of their extensive back catalogue, but fans have been also been rewarded with two new recordings to enjoy.
We’ve already heard the first of these old-school style numbers, ‘Doom And Gloom’ – and now the second single, ‘One More Shot,’ has also been released.
‘One More Shot,’ has Jagger pleading with an unknown woman to “take me back,” and “give me one more shot,” over a repetitive guitar part and solid rock beat. It doesn’t have quite the explosive punch of their first offering from GRRR!, ‘Doom and Gloom’, but it’s still classic Stones – guitar riffs, Jagger’s instantly recognisable crooning, and a honking piano playing the blues in the background.
While officially the Stones are only celebrating the release of the album and their 50th anniversary with just four shows, two each in the UK and the US, it’s been widely speculated these will be extended into a lengthier touring period.
Their management have long insisted that those four dates would be the only shows performed in honour of the anniversary. But they’ve found it difficult to get the band themselves to keep their mouths shut. Guitarist Keith Richards more or less let the cat out of the bag, saying to be BBC; “Nobody’s actually given a heads up on that, but I don’t think that this band is gonna wind up all of this for four shows. I think they want to do something for the end of the year, and I think next year probably looks like it’s on.”
It would certainly seem like a solid financial decision, considering their last tour was the second-highest grossing in history, earning upwards of $US 550 million.
They have also all but announced an Australian visit, with Jagger commenting that he’s “really looking forward” to a visit down under.
GRRR! is set to be released on November 12th, only a few short days from now. It will available for purchase as a 3CD set, a 12” Vinyl boxset and a collector’s box set including a 7″ Vinyl, Hardback book and collectable materials.
