Big Day Out Sells 10,000 Tickets To NZ Leg In 45 Minutes
The lineup for next year’s Big Day Out has proven a big hit with New Zealand audiences after 10,000 tickets that were allocated in the pre-sale for the touring festival’s 2014 kick-off in Auckland, on January 17th next year, sold out in just 45 minutes. Going on sale at 9am last Monday at the discounted price of $165 (a saving of $20), punters rushed the box office to snap up the passes for the festival’s return to Auckland at its new permanent home at Western Springs after scrapping the NZ leg entirely for 2013 after a financially problematic 2012 edition.
The New Zealand Big Day Out 2014 lineup features triple headliners Pearl Jam, Blur, and Arcade Fire, along with Snoop Dogg/Lion and Major Lazer, but as NZ promoter Campbell Smith previously confirmed, the bill also contains a number of bands exclusive to the Auckland leg, including The Phoenix Foundation, P Money, Ladi 6, Beastwars, Concord Dawn, and Kody Nielson (ex-Mint Chicks, currently Opossum, brother of UMO’s Ruban Nielson) (via IBT)
HAIM Make Girls Star Cry In Their New Video
Sibling buzz band HAIM have a pretty awesome sense of humour, able to laugh off their embarrassing manufactured girl group origins, and now they’ve proved it once again with the music video for ‘The Wire’, the lead single from their forthcoming debut album, Days Are Gone. The clip stars Jorma Taccone, best known as a member of comedy group The Lonely Island and for his recurring role as Booth Jonathan on HBO series Girls, who gets to ham up his heartbreak after eldest sister, Danielle, breaks up with him. He’s one of three unlucky lads that gets dumped by the girls in the new clip which really is worth your four-and-a-bit minutes, if only to hear the single’s slinky hybrid of 70s West Coast pop/rock, 80s RnB flourishes, and 90s fem-pop another spin.
Chet Faker Drops Brand New Single
Just announced as part of the Falls Festival 2013 lineup, bearded soultronica star Chet Faker has just gifted fans with a brand new single, rather unceremoniously dropping his new cut, ‘Melt’, online earlier today. The new tune, which features a guest spot from Brooklyn singer Kilo Kush, is the first release under Faker’s record deal with US label Downtown, despite inking the deal nearly a year ago. Meanwhile, Chet Faker is set to make further inroads overseas with the kick off a North American Tour on 3rd September which includes a slot at the first-ever Laneway Detroit alongside fellow Aussie ambassador of electronic hits, Flume. The pair are also working on an EP together, though progress on that – and Faker’s often scrapped debut album – has yet to be revealed. Hopefully ‘Melt’ is the first glimpse of a bigger musical picture. (via Mess + Noise)
Frank Ocean & Tyler, The Creator To Headline Odd Future Festival
OFWGKTA Carnival, the music festival curated by hip hop collective Odd Future, is getting its second annual showing on the 9th November in LA. Headlining the event is Odd Future’s two most famous members, controversy magnet Tyler, The Creator and neo-soul singer Frank Ocean, with additional acts for the OFWGKTA Carnival bill to be revealed. As well as music, the event lives up to its carnival name with rides, games, food trucks, and a skate park all for US$ 50 entry. There’s also the Flog Gnaw (a ‘Wolf Gang’ anagram) VIP package, which gets punters a branded backpack and t shirt and a meet n greet with the artists for US$ 199. Owl Eyes Releases New Single
Also on the new(is) music front, Melbourne songstress Owl Eyes has issued a new single in ‘Hurricane’, the fourth(!) track to be lifted from her debut album Nightswim. The tune frames Brooke Addamo’s crystalline vocals with echoing drum patterns and widescreen synths in a production job from award-winning Aussie producer Stylaz Fuego. ‘Hurricane’ will also see Owl Eyes embark on a national tour this October, touted as her last live dates for the year, with support from Willow Beats and Kite String Tangle then finishing with an appearance at Fat As Butter Festival in Newcastle.
