Surviving Beastie Boys Record Track With Yoko Ono

Beastie Boys members Ad-Rock and Mike D have revealed that their first new music since the passing of Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch is a collaboration with Mrs. John Lennon herself, the Australia-bound Yoko Ono. Adam Rock and Mike Diamond have recorded a track with Ono called ‘Bad Dancer‘ for the new Plastic Ono Band album Take Me To The Land Of Hell, out 16th September. The track, along with selections from the album is streaming at the official website. The record also features collaborations with Lenny Kravitz, Questlove of The Roots, Nels Cline of Wilco, and a duet with tUnE-yArDs called ‘Tabetai’ (listen below). In related news, Mike D and Ad-Rock have signed a deal to release the Beastie Boys memoirs in 2015, which will chronicle the influential group’s career including the sad loss of Adam Yauch last year from cancer, aged 47. Nirvana’s In Utero Anniversary Reissue To Feature ‘Forgotten Tune’

Nirvana’s swansong record, 1993’s In Utero, is getting the deluxe reissue treatment this 23rd September in a campaign that was birthed (quite literally) last month. A number of editions will be available, including remastered CD and 3xLP vinyl editions of the album, as well as a 3CD + 1DVD Super Deluxe Box Set (in the vein of the Nevermind reissue), which includes the Live And Loud concert film of the final touring lineup of Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear. The lavish box set will feature 70 tracks including B-sides, compilation tracks, live recordings, and previously unreleased material, including an instrumental literally called ‘Forgotten Tune’, as well as the controversial Steve Albini mixes of ‘Heart Shaped Box’ and ‘All Apologies’, as well as the original solo demo of ‘Marigold’ by Dave Grohl from 1990 – thought to be the earliest recording of the musician. All editions of the In Utero editions are available from the Nirvana store. (via Pitchfork)

Adelaide’s Big Day Out 2014 Venue Change Approved By Council

Adelaide City Council has approved the application from Big Day Out organisers to stage its January 31st leg in the SA capital for 2014 at Bonython Park. The change in venue marks the departure of the one-day touring festival from its historic home at the Wayville Showgrounds after 19 years. The shift four kilometres north to Bonython Park caters for larger audiences being drawn to the new three main stage set-up at the 17-hectare site, sprawled between the major Port Road and the River Torrens near the Adelaide CBD. Adelaide City Council approved the submissions after calling on public submissions last July before granting the lease to the Big Day Out, which will cause restrictions to neighbours and residents for two weeks to allow organisers time to set up and ‘bump out’ of Bonython Park. The Charlatans Drummer Jon Brookes Dies Age 44

Jon Brookes, drummer and founding member for long-running Britpop band The Charlatans, has died at the age of 44, three years after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. Though his condition meant he took a break from touring in 2010 and in early 2013, Brookes had been the band’s drummer ever since their formation in 1989, playing across all 11 studio albums including #1 records Some Friendly, Tellin’ Stories and their eponymous 1995 LP. Brookes is survived by his wife and three daughters.

“It is with great sadness that we have to announce that Jon Brookes, the drummer with The Charlatans, died this morning aged 44. He passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning with his family at his bedside,” read a statement from the group. “Jon was a brilliant drummer, an inspiration, a founding member of The Charlatans, part of our family and a friend to everyone in and around the band.” It is the second time the band have been struck by tragedy, following the death of original keys player Rob Collins in 1996 from a car crash. The Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess is just one of the many tributes pouring in over twitter. (via The Telegraph)

Learn How To Play New Order’s ‘Ceremony’ With Peter Hook

The ongoing feud between the current members of New Order and ex-bassist Peter Hook are up there in terms of Axl Rose/Slash proportions, but that hasn’t stopped the former Joy Division/Joy Division co-founder from playing his former band’s back catalogue. In fact, ‘Hooky’ and his new band The Light are headed out on a North American tour where they’ll play classic New Order album Movement and Power, Corruption and Lies live and in full. To celebrate the bassist has taken to YouTube to show fans how to play the classic ‘Ceremony’ on a rather loud-looking bass. (via Alan Cross)
