The iPod generation of fragmented listening, digital downloads, and streaming services has supposedly turned the album format – in the lofty artistic definition of the term – into a dying breed; one that regularly needs saving with the introduction of each new medium or musical revolution.
Yet, it’s the album that remains held up as the true measure of a recording artist. Its value and importance best demonstrated by the heated discussion that gets generated every time the topic of the most important, influential, and best of them is raised.
Well, let the arguments begin.
A list of the greatest albums “of all time” has been compiled by long-running British tastemakers NME, who are famous for their (often polarising) list-making.
The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time, is “the final, definitive, definitely last of its kind, never to be repeated, comprehensive, and absolutely accurate (obviously) word on the best records ever,” according to the cover of the latest issue of the British publication.
NME makes no apologies about their results, indicating that they’re designed to stimulate debate, with the 500 records selected for canonisation running the gamut from music veterans to emerging bands, through multiple genres, eras, and countries. But of course, it’s a British classic that’s taken out pole position.
The Smiths’ The Queen Is Dead, the band’s third studio album released in 1986, has been named as the greatest album of all time in the NME list, put together by the critical institution’s 82 or so writers. “No album is made in a vacuum, but The Queen Is Dead is one of the select few that seems to transcend its influences and synthesise them into something singular and new,” reads the accompanying blurb for the #1 slot. “The final, definitive, definitely last of its kind, never to be repeated, comprehensive, and absolutely accurate (obviously) word on the best records ever…”

The famously po-faced indie group’s crowning 37-ish minutes contains some famous entries in The Smiths songbook, such as ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’, ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’, and ‘I Know It’s Over’.
Produced by the band’s Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, the album’s engineer Stephen Street cheekily tweeted that he was “chuffed” with the NME result, but added the hashtag “#wrongthough”.
The Smiths beat out venerable favourites featured in the poll’s Top 10 such as The Beatles (Revolver at #2 & The Beatles at #9), David Bowie (Hunky Dory at #3), and The Velvet Underground’s quasi-eponymous debut album (The Velvet Underground & Nico at #5).
The business end of the list is also rich with Britpop figureheads, featuring Pulp, the Stone Roses, and Oasis, while rock music occupied much of the top quarter – including Nirvana’s deathless Nevermind (coming in at #11), and LPs from Pixies and Patti Smith, the highest ranking female on the list.
Meanwhile The Strokes’ 2001 debut Is This It landed the New York quintet at #4 (ahead of The Velvet Underground, the band that invented them, as , as Julian Casablancas pretty much conceded in a tribute to the deceased Lou Reed).
Other modern classics peppered the upper echelons of the greatest albums poll, including Arcade Fire’s 2004 debut Funeral (#13), My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless (#18), Arctic Monkeys’ Whatever People Say I Am… (#19), followed closely by Radiohead’s OK Computer (#20).
Forthcoming Golden Plains and Breath Of Life festival headliners Public Enemy had the distinction of being the highest hip hop (and non-rock) release on the list, with their 1998 opus It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back landing at #17, though Kanye West is not far behind, as My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy landed #21, ahead of – in order – Blur’s Parklife, David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust…, The Rolling Stones‘ Exile On Main St., and What’s Going On? by Marvin Gaye.
Elsewhere on the list, AC/DC’s Back In Black was the highest charting release by an Aussie act (#197), while Pink Floyd’s famous 1972 masterpiece Dark Side Of The Moon could be found at #132, and a few albums released this year also make the cut; including The Nationals’ Trouble Will Find Me (#478), Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories (#497), and though barely a month old, Arctic Monkeys’ AM, at #455 (beating high profile releases from Jay Z, Metallica, Nirvana, and The Cure).
Whether you see it is another topic to promote healthy music debate, or a grab from a publication that’s experienced a sharp decline in its circulation in recent years, you can view the Top 25 of NME‘s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time below, and the full list on the next page.
