Some partnerships are as inevitable as they are beautiful, Bogey and Bacall, Tracy and Hepburn, Hall and Oates, chips and gravy, and, as such, become the stuff of legends.
On Tuesday, May 15, amid Melbourne’s biting autumnal squall, another such partnership joined this illustrious roll call; Saskwatch and Northside Records.
In a ceremony held at Northside Records’ namesake retail store, the band and Northside head honcho Chris Gill inked the deal amidst an atmosphere of mutual love and respect with a shared commitment to “Keep things real”. Reports of high fives and hair ruffles amongst the attendees are, as yet, unconfirmed but highly likely.
Says Saskwatch’s Liam McGorry of the signing,”We’re incredibly excited to be signing with Chris and Northside Records. Not only are they our favourite record store, but have been a supporter of local music in Melbourne for over 10 years. It’s also a privilege to be the first release on their label.”
Gill added, “Saskwatch and Northside Records are the perfect fit. They are both funky and ace. Together we hope to launch a great sound and a new label that will serve up more Funk than John Mcenroes’ headband.”
It’s a Melbourne truth that Northside Records is the city’s eminent source for all great things soul and soul-related. Therefore it comes as no surprise to those in the know that Northside and the city’s hottest soul group (or family as there are nine of them) Saskwatch would join forces to create and spread new funk-flavoured magic to the good people.
The first fruit from this new relationship will drop in July in the form of a new video and single from Saskwatch to be followed by the band’s hotly anticipated album in mid-August. More immediately, word comes through the grapevine, that Northside Records is planning a very special party for, and performance from, Saskwatch soon… keep your eyes peeled for updates.
Saskwatch will be performing every Thursday night this June at Melbourne’s Cherry Bar. Get up, close and personal!
