We’ve known about Something For Kate’s upcoming sixth studio album for a little while now, with the trio drip-feeding info from the Dallas, Texas studio where it was being recorded; as well as offering a few juicy pieces of video footage.

The Melbourne band have today officially released the first details of their sixth studio album, to be titled Leave Your Soul To Science and released on September 28.

It’s considered a long-awaited return from fans, who still managed to get their fix thanks to band linchpin (and perhaps Australia’s tallest frontman) Paul Dempsey going solo in 2009 with Everything Is True, but Leave Your Soul To Science marks the official return of Dempsey, bassist Stephanie Ashworth and drummer Clint Hyndman since 2006’s Desert Lights.

Dempsey reported last year that hew was writing the material for a new album in New York, but it wasn’t until they decamped to Dallas that they knuckled down to finish their latest studio effort, recorded with producer John Congleton; whose previous credits include everyone from St. Vincent to Modest Mouse and Okkervil River.

Speaking to The Music Network, Dempsey called the new album, “definitely the most sonically interesting record we’ve ever made. There’s some really savage, fuzz bass sounds on there. On the one hand, it feels like the most organic record we’ve ever made, because it’s all happened so naturally and quickly. We haven’t over-thought anything.”

Meanwhile the band’s official website has received an overhaul to feature the album (including artwork, see below) and the following message:

“There’ll be further announcements about the new single really soon and we’ll also be posting secret show info, special offers and pre-sale ticket offers to members of the mailing list.”

The trio are also appearing as part of the lineup for the Queenscliff Music Festival in a stellar homegrown lineup including Missy Higgins, Cat Empire, Gurrumul and You Am I. As well as recently confirming they’ll be joining the bill for QLD’s Coolum Beach music festival, Golden Days.

We here at Tone Deaf are already pretty excited about Something For Kate’s first new album in six years, take a peep at the artwork and an album teaser below:
