Last Friday the long-storied, much-loved Melbourne trio Something For Kate dropped yet another taste of their forthcoming album Leave Your Soul To Science, the band’s first album in six years – following on the hiatus they embarked on after releasing and touring Desert Lights in 2006.
Entitled “The Fireball At The End Of Everything”, the subtle and restrained track followed on from the needling guitars and slow-burning lyrical drama of lead single ‘Survival Expert’; which – along with the band’s recent album preview shows in Ballarat, Sydney and Melbourne (which our Tone Deaf writer reviewed), demonstrates “an accomplished return to form; focussing the concise alchemy of the band’s strengths.”
Now it’s only four days wait until the release of Leave Your Soul To Science – but waiting is for suckers.
Thanks to the combined kindness of Triple J and Something For Kate, the youth radio station are offering a full stream of the new album ahead of its official September 28th release date.
Speaking of the new record, band linchpin Paul Dempsey says: “It’s definitely the most sonically interesting record we’ve ever made. There’s some really savage, fuzz bass sounds on there. On the one hand, it feels like the most organic record we’ve ever made, because it’s all happened so naturally and quickly. We haven’t over-thought anything.”
Dempsey, along with bassist Stephanie Ashworth and drummer Clint Hyndman, decamped to America earlier in the year in order to work with producer John Congleton, whose CV includes work with St. Vincent and Okkervil River from his studio in Dallas, Texas.
The first impressions of the musical fruits of their labour are impressive, but don’t take our word for it – grab a pair of headphones and get listening to the brand new Something For Kate album with the stream below.
You’d better brush up on the lyrics to those new songs if you want to be able to belt them out at one of the band’s many upcoming live dates. First, they embark on a hotly anticipated national tour in October, with two hometown shows at the The Corner Hotel selling out like hot cakes before a third was announced.
They’ve also been named for the festival circuit, with the three-piece set to play the Queenscliff Music Festival, Golden Days and Homebake, surely keeping them busy for the rest of year.
