Just weeks out from their appearance at I’ll Be Your Mirror Melbourne, the event that marks All Tomorrow’s Parties return to Australia which the band helped curate, The Drones have released the first taste of their long-awaited follow-up to 2008’s Havilah.
‘How To See Through Fog’ is the lead single from I See Seaweed, the band’s first new set of material in five years, recorded in regional Victoria last year and produced by frontman Gareth Liddiard and mixed by Burker Reid. The record is due for release on Friday March 1st through MGM.
The single features Liddiard’s distinctively gnarled accent and poetic lyricism, floating over a lighter bed of piano and gently lolling drums, before some characteristically jagged guitars come scraping through to punctuate the sonic landscape, as well as decorating the coda with its wiry, shifting finale.
Administrators of The Drones’ Facebook page also confirm that the band will be heading out on national tour to promote their latest album, writing:
Glad to hear everyone is enjoying the new track, ‘How To See Through Fog’. It will be available on February 1st from iTunes, we will post the link for you when we get it. The album sounds incredible, tour dates will be announced next month (for Australia), you are all in for a treat.
Fans will likely get to hear an advance of some of the band’s new material when they headline the Sunday night the group themselves curated for ATP’s I’ll Be Your Mirror Melbourne, held on the weekend of February 16th and 17th.
The Drones top a bill they helped put together, including the reunited lineup of Beasts of Bourbon, Einstürzende Neubauten, Dan Kelly’s Dream Band, My Disco, Lost Animal, and the recent addition of Pere Ubu performing their 1978 debut The Modern Dance, live and in full, just one day shy of the album’s 35th Anniversary.
I See Seaweed will mark The Drones’ first new release since their 2011 live compilation A Thousand Mistakes, and the return of Gareth Liddiard and partner/bassist Fiona Kitschen from their time spent touring and recording with Spencer P Jones and The Nothing Butts, a supergroup featuring the Beasts of Bourbon ringleader and original Scientist/Hoodoo Guru James Baker.
Have a listen to ‘How See Through The Fog’, the brand new single from The Drones below, as well as the dates, details, and lineup for ATP’s I’ll Be Your Mirror Melbourne.
