The most played songs on Triple J Unearthed digital radio has been revealed by the national youth broadcaster, unveiling a Top 25 list of songs for the first half of 2013.
Following on from their similar Top 50 list of 2012, there’s a huge variety of bands artists known and not-so-well known representing all manner of genres. Melbourne seems to be the most fertile city according to the list, with eight of the 25 acts hailing from the Victorian capital, including the #1 slot.
Fractures, the musical moniker for Melbourne singer and multi-instrumentalist Mark Zito, has been crowned the most played song of 2013 thus far with his atmospheric tune, “Twisted’. Featured in a previous Tone Deaf Mixtape, ‘Twisted’ “invokes an aural quality of James Blake or The xx”and is obviously a major win for Fractrues, who had to cancel his debut show in June earlier this year after getting a fracture (yes, really).
Another Melbourne songwriter, Kathryn Rollins, came in second place on the list with her track ‘Who Shot The Bird Down?’, while Perth indie rockers Rainy Day Women came in third with ‘Friends’ as Illawarra’s Shining Bird and Sydney electronic outfit Zebra Zap rounded out the Top 5.
Other notable entries include The Delta Riggs’ ‘Rah Rah Radio’ (at #6) taken from the Melbourne rocker’s debut album Hex.Love.Killer, released through the band’s own record label of the same name. The ‘Annandale Hotel House Band’ Sticky Fingers make an appearance at #16 with their tune ‘Australia Street’ from their Caress Your Soul album.
A number of the bands on the Top 25 list were also big winners on Triple J Unearthed’s Top 50 year-end list for 2012, including Sydney hip hop duo Jackie Onassis, Adelaide indie rockers Bad Dreems, and the aforementioned Sticky Fingers and Rainy Day Women.
As Triple J Unearthed themselves point out; “this list has a little bit of everything including brash industrial dance music, low-slung hip hop, jittery lo-fi pop and beguiling singer songwriters. There’s hoarse-throated punk from Adelaide, woozy electronic indie out of Wollongong and overblown Perth glam rock.”
