Record Store Day is like a second Christmas for music fans, and with this year’s annual instalment fast approaching, the internationally celebrated event is already starting to shower us with gifts.

The official calendar date to celebrate vinyl stores and to support local music scenes, Record Store Day has grown immensely in recent years with many high profile musicians and industry figures throwing their support behind the cause in the form of exclusive releases and one-off events.

Once again it’s our much loved, highly acclaimed export, Tame Impala, who are joining in on the vinyl fun. “[Kevin Parker’s] goal was to give fans something they won’t already have.”

Fresh from blowing up with internet with their cover of Michael Jackson and remix collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, the band have just announced plans to release a live album on Saturday 19th April, the date for Record Store 2014, Saturday 19th April.

Called Live Versions, it will feature in-the-flesh recordings taken from the quintet’s live show in Chicago last year.

A press release says frontman Kevin Parker picked the tracks “based on how different the live versions are from the album versions. His goal was to give fans something they won’t already have; something they’ve only previously experienced at a Tame Impala show.”

Clearly big fans of vinyl and what it stands for, this isn’t the first time Tame Impala have supported Record Store Day – last year the troupe also released a special 12” expansion of their 2008 self-titled EP with previously unheard tracks.

The 2013 event also pulled in exclusive releases from the likes of David Bowie, The Flaming Lips and Jack White as vinyl ambassadors. It managed to smash previously-held records of one-week vinyl sales, marking it a huge success for the industry, with expectations for the 2014 Record Store Day to follow in similar footsteps.
