Radiohead are back on the road and the speculation has already begun on not if but when the band will return to Australian shores for their first tour since 2004. Last time they were here they had to cancel their final show after Thom Yorke developed inflammation & infection of his vocal chords so Australian fans are unsurprisingly frothing at the mouth at any wiff of a tour rumour.
The latest, courtesy of FasterLouder, is that we could see the band at this year’s Splendour In The Grass now that they have been officially announced as a headliner for Fuji Rock in Japan which occurs around the same time. Matching up the headliners for Fuji Rock and Splendour has been a bit hit a miss over the years, although they did share nine bands last year.
The Thom Yorke fronted band were an industry insider favourite to headline this years Big Day Out, but instead we got a lineup that consisted of Soundgarden, Kasabian, and last years Splendour headliner Kanye West.
In an interview with FasterLouder last year Splendour promoter Jess Ducrou spoke briefly about stronger ties between her festival and Fuji Rock saying “We’ve always had a light dialogue on dates and so on,” she explained, “but interestingly this year we have started talking more with them and I think that will really benefit everyone.”
Another hot rumour for Splendour are the recently reformed Stone Roses who have also been announced as a headliner for Fuji Rock. The iconic 90s group have been rumoured to have already been approached by Australian promoters and a festival appearance at Splendour to coincide with a tour would make sense.
We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any other clues and will let you know if we hear anything more.
UPDATE: Splendour In The Grass has issued the following statement: Lots of talk out there about Radiohead at Splendour this year. As much as this would be nice, we’d like to officially dispel these rumours by letting everyone know that unfortunately they will definitely not be playing Splendour 2012… we’ll get them one day ;-)
