The Great Escape festival have revealed the first acts on its 2013 lineup with a few local bands making the cut. The three day festival, held in Brighton in May, features an eclectic mix of artists. Often hailed as the UK’s answer to SXSW, the festival will take place 16-18th May with over 16,000 expected to attend shows across 30+ venues.

Similarly to SXSW, who announced a strong Aussie lineup of 40 bands headed to the Austin, Texas industry event this March, UK’s Great Escape have revealed no less than 10 Australian acts on its 2013 bill with more announcements still to come.

Among those flying the flag for Australia are Unearthed High winners Snakadaktal and sister act Stonefield, as well Brisbane’s 12-piece garage pop outfit Velicoraptor. Other Brisbane locals are also set to feature at the international three-day event, including the Thomas Calder-fronted folk heroes The Trouble with Templeton, indie outfit Cub Scouts and Hungry Kids of Hungary, who will make their second appearance at the festival.

Solo folk-electro artist Caitlin Park, Melbourne acts Dune and Neighbourhood Youth, plus Sydney post-rock instrumental act Sleepmakeswaves round out the Aussie contingent with a strong mix of homegrown talent jetting to the UK.

The Great Escape Festival has a strong reputation for discovering new talent with past headliners such as Adele, the XX, Alabama Shakes, and Alt-J all going on to bigger and better things.

“The core aim of TGE is to champion new music, and it’s great to be in a position where we can give festival goers an exciting cross-section of new artists to engage with,” says Festival Director, Kat Morris. It’s hoped that big things are also on the cards for our local talent featuring on the 2013 bill.

The man responsible for booking the Great Escape lineup is Martin Elbourne, who was named Adelaide’s Thinker in Residence last year in a stint hoped to revive its music scene.

Also the chief booker for the iconic UK festival Glastonbury and Great Escape, Elbourne has been working with the Premier’s office to overcome planning and licensing issues that have plagued Adelaide’s live music scene in a number of consultations taking place on separate visits down under in the last six months.

The Glastonbury and Great Escape booker obviously took a shining to Australia’s domesetic talent during his trips, which included a vist to Brisbane music industry conference BIGSOUND last September, where he was also featured as one of the event’s many guest speakers.

In any case it’s a boon for the ten Aussie acts that will be making their own Great Escape to the UK Festival.
