It seems we can’t get enough of festival lineup leaks, rumours and announcements, based on the speculation leading up to this year’s Splendour In The Grass alone. Now our sights are set further afield with the rumour mill on later festivals already starting to churn.
November’s Harvest Festival has been a hot topic for lineup guessing games, thanks largely to promoter, AJ Maddah’s Twitter account, who is also handling return of the Vans Warped Tour to our shores this December, while next year’s Big Day Out is also setting music lovers tongues wagging.
Now, the lineup for Laneway Festival 2014 has been given some major lineup clues thanks the announcement of the festival’s first Northern Hemisphere, Laneway Detroit.
On September 14th, headliners The National and Sigur Ros will join the likes of Deerhunter, Solange, Warpaint, Savages, and CHVRCHES in descending on the Meadow Brook musical festival stage in Detroit, Michigan. Joining them are Aussie men of the moment, Chet Faker and Flume (the latter Sydney beatmaker’s ‘Holdin’ On’ also soundtracked Laneway’s lineup announcement video).
Also playing are Aluna George, The Dismemberment Plan, Frightened Rabbit, Icona Pop, Washed Out, Youth Lagoon, Phosphorescent, Icona Pop, Haerts, Charlie XCX, My Brightest Diamon, and El-P & Killer Mike under the moniker Run The Jewels.
The US Laneway festival grounds will include the Oakland University campus and include four total stages, three of which were constructed especially for Laneway’s Detroit debut, and along with the music will be the selection of markets, food, beverage, and showcases.
Laneway co-founders Danny Rogers and Jerome Borazio were keen to fast-forward an American leg of their indie festival to Detroit because of “its unbelievably dynamic musical past and present – [it] is the perfect location for our first foray into North America.” On September 14th, headliners The National and Sigur Ros will join… Aussie men of the moment, Chet Faker and Flume.
Of expanding the festival overseas, Rogers and Borazio said: “We’re also really looking forward to getting behind Australasian artists and helping them continue the amazing run of success Aussie acts have had in the States recently.”
“Coming to America is a big moment for Laneway and is the first time an Australian festival has been launched into North America,” they continue. “We are delighted to be working with our partners, who are some of the best operators in the industry and their vision will be integral to the event’s success.”
Laneway Festival’s increasing popularity, as well as its ability to consistently deliver exciting and innovative lineups that stand up strongly alongside other major festivals, is proving that the event is fast edging towards the forefront of the Australian live music scen,. with our Tone Deaf reviewer saying of the Melbourne Laneway leg this year that it is “fast becoming the most enviable date on the summer festival calendar.”
What started off as an alleyway street party in Melbourne back in 2004 has experienced a growing expansion into not only a national series but also into international territory with the Singapore editions and New Zealand Laneway Festival circuit hosting shows in Auckland.
It goes without saying that the announcement of the North American event has set the wheels in motion for speculation of the Australian Laneway lineup for next year, despite it being nine months away, with the possible return of current Splendour headliners The National, and returning Harvest headliners Sigur Ros.
Laneway’s recent reveal of who’d be playing their stage at the London Field Day festival also engineered speculation. Charlie Boyer & The Voyeurs, Chvrches, Dark Bells, Daughter, Django Django, Kurt Vile, Mount Kimbie, and Palma Violets are playing the London event, with Laneway co-founder Danny Rogers saying, “we’re both honoured and super excited to have such a crazy amazing bunch of acts play our stage, some of whom might even pop up on one or more of forthcoming Laneway events around the world soon!”
