The Joey Bada$$ Australian Tour 2013 has been announced and following news that the buzz-worthy MC is headed to Australia for Meredith Music Festival this December, promoters Niche and Live Nation have announced a series of sideshows that pairs the 19-year-old Joey Bada$$ with fellow Brooklynites the Underachiveres, and Australia’s newest sensation Remi, for his debut Australian Tour.
Heralding a return to golden era sounds yet remaining 100% a part of the new school thanks to appearances with A$AP Rocky and Mac Miller, Joey Bada$$’s lyrical form is beyond his years, his complex flow bubbling effortlessly on top of jazzy instrumentals.
In June 2012 his 1999 mixtape set the internet alight, with fans of new school Rap excited for something fresh and new and die hard old school heads being satisfied with something familiar (and still available for download here). Triple j picked up the single ‘Waves’ and following in September, Bada$$ dropped Rejex: a collection of songs that did not make 1999 (d/l here). In June 2013, he followed up with Summer Knights (featuring the radio-supported ‘Word Is Bond’, d/l here) and announced that his full length debut album would be released in early 2014.
Signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint, The Underachievers’ debut mixtape Indigoism (d/l here)came out at a time when Brooklyn was making all kinds of noise with acts like Flatbush Zombies and Action Bronson poised to take over. “Born in Brooklyn, raised in Flatbush,” Ak and Issa Dash – aka The Underachievers – have arrived. From the moment their first music video, ‘So Devilish,’ surfaced in May 2012, the duo set themselves comfortably in their own lane. The young rappers have since evolved from creating a DIY movement in Brooklyn to shutting down stages on tour with Kendrick Lamar and taking on the world, one hypnotic video at a time (clocking over 2.5 million YouTube views). With a raw energy that feels almost reminiscent of 90s hip hop, they shook the game up with a refreshing new voice, bringing plenty of psychedelia and heightened lyricism into the mix.
There could not be a more fitting local guest to join Joey Bada$$ and The Underachievers on their debut Australian tour than Remi, who himself has torn a hole in Triple J playlists with the jazzy ‘Sangria’ and the funk-filled ‘Saggin‘. His debut LP Regular People Shit was a top-notch mix of original electronic production, soulful harmonies and familiar samples whereas his new mixtape FYG (F*ck Your Genre) takes in all manner of influences from French filtered House, 90s RnB and even a nod to Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince.
Together, the three artists form one of the strongest hip hop bills of the year, (let’s hope the dreaded Aussie hip hop curse stays clear of this one) don’t miss Joey Bada$$, The Underachievers and Remi as they take over venues from coast to coast this December.
