What up! My name is Pat aka” Pataphysics, I am Trumpet player, Mc, Producer and Sound engineer. I make hip hop heavily influenced by jazz. Most of my lyrics are of a political nature. Last year I released my debut album Subversive which got a special mention in the Australia music prize. Songs I have written have won a mercury prize, been on national TV and featured in the national Gallery of Victoria. Pretty excited about releasing the new EP called IED.
Tell us about IED. What influenced the EP and inspired it?
Well IED stands for Improvised Explosive Device and it brings together the elements of the live performance. As for the inspiration a lot of the content is about the way we engage with life and the socio/political/personal interactions we have with in it.
How does it differ from your debut album, Subversive?
Subversive was my first album so it took longer to get out. On this recording I am joined by Project nRt and Diego Villalta with whom I perform live. This EP evolved from playing these tracks live and jamming as a group and it’s the best representation of the live show thus far.
You only released your debut album last year; does this EP feel like a quick turnaround?
Well I spent a lot of time working on it in the studio, so creatively I’m eager to get working on the next album, got so many different things I wanna try. I guess compared to some artists/bands who usually have an 18 month turn around for an EP or single its a quick follow up.
Why an EP and not another album?
On this EP I wanted to record the live aspect before it changes. This EP features Nrt and Diego on every track, we have been playing a lot together and are really tight as a unit. So this Ep was really about capturing this moment and the music we have been making together.
You recently composed the theme music to Nazeem Hussain’s SBS show Legally Brown. How did that come about? Have you seen any episodes yet?
Well my friend Nazeem was working on the show and they were looking for music, my music has appeared on TV before so he mentioned me to one of the producers. They checked out my stuff, called me in for a meeting, I wrote the music and they really liked it. I Haven’t had a chance to check out much of the show, but will hopefully after this launch.
You’re playing Melbourne in early November, what can the uninitiated expect from one of your sets?
Jam’s, Beats, Trumpet, Mpc’s, Guitar, Soul, Militant rhymes, anti-government strategies, laughs, awesome projection show and a good party. On the night I will be joined by Birdz and Dj Sadge will be playing some tunes as well.
What records have you stolen from your parent’s record collection and why?
I was into my folks Harry Belafonte record, I really liked listening to hole in the bucket when I was little. Also some Baila records from Sri Lanka, which had some sick live jams on em.
What Australian artist would you most like to collaborate with and why?
Tricky, I think it would be pretty fun to Jam and write with Bart Willoughby, he plays heaps of instruments and seems like a cool guy. Plutonic lab lives round the corner from mine, hung out a few times but his drums weren’t set up. Saw Casey Donavon live for the first time in Sydney at this thing I was at and was really surprised how awesome she is live, would be sick to write some music for her voice. Also really dig Alto saxophonist’s Ian Chaplin’s playing.
What’s on the cards for the rest of the year and early 2014?
Going to start writing and recording the next album, also have production work for a couple of projects to do.
