“Pop Metal” has existed for quite some time now thanks to the likes of Def Leppard, and a cutesy approach on the artform also sprung about with the advent of Babymetal. Hell, even Bring Me the Horizon has been considered to be a pop-metal pop-punk hybrid. Thanks to musician Poppy, however, we can usher in a new genre completely, bubblegum-pop metal.

Like a fever dream in a field of rainbows, Poppy has released a brand new track called ‘Concrete’, which is, in fact, a metal track, fused with an absolute truckload of bubblegum pop tendencies. It’s the weirdest and wildest ride you’ll probably ever go on, as things move sharply from dark to light. It’s essentially like riding Wonka’s Great Glass Elevator on a trip from Hell to Gumby Land in rapid time.

And the lyrics are an absolute treat and a half, with simple childish pop lines like “some people like candy” and others like “bury me six feet deep”. Just check this out:

“Some people like candy / Some people like coffee / But these lifeless flavors don’t satisfy me
I tried to eat ice cream / I tried to drink tea / But I need the taste of young blood in my teeth.”

or how about these colourful and cute lyrics:

“Bury me six feet deep / Cover me in concrete turn me into a street
Bury me six feet deep / Cover me in concrete turn me into a street”

This isn’t her first foray into heavy music, though. Prior release “Play Destroy,” a collaboration with Grimes, showcases that the artist is probably looking to make this new brand of overly joyous metal her thing.

Cementing her new transition into the scene, she’s also going on a “Threesome” tour with Bring Me the Horizon and Sleeping With Sirens.
