Riley Gale, frontman for beloved Texas thrash metal act Power Trip, passed away on August 24th last year at age 34 — as Rolling Stone report, the revered frontman’s cause of death has been revealed.

The Dallas Country Medical Examiner’s office confirmed that Gale died from the toxic effects of fentanyl, and the manner of his death has been ruled as accidental.

“It is with greatest of sadness we must announce that our lead singer and brother Riley Gale passed away last night,” the family of Gale wrote in a statement shared on Power Trip’s Twitter the day following his death. “Riley was a friend, a brother, a son. Riley was both a larger than life rock star and a humble and giving friend.

“He touched so many lives through his lyrics and through his huge heart. He treated everyone he met as a friend and he always took care of his friends. We will celebrate Riley’s life and never forget the great works of music, charity, and love that he left behind. You, the fans, meant so much to him, please know how special you are.”

In October, organizers in Dallas unveiled plans to open a library honouring the late Power Trip vocalist. The Dallas Hope Center, the city’s sole shelter for LGBTQ+ youth, will be home to the Riley Gale Library.

“A place that each resident can go to access a variety of books, request books they are interested in that we will provide, and socialize with one another,” Dallas Hope Center said of the project. “Riley Gale shared his love of reading with many of his friends, which is what led to the development of the Riley Gale Memorial Library.”
